Local positioning (local SEO) – is the promotion of a website in local search results (in a specific area) for keywords that usually contain the name of the city in the phrase. In the case of local positioning, we can talk about the local positioning of the website or the company’s showcase in Google Maps.

How Do We Research Local SEO

We start with research using SEMRUSH and UBERSUGGEST for the phrases with the highest volume and lowest SEO difficulty. After that, we compile an extensive list related to your business. Included in our research is a search of Google for how many web pages on the internet contain each phrase enclosed in quotes.

This is just going to be a short and quick example to give you a clearer picture of what we do. It does not compare to the thoroughness we spend on an actual project.

1st for this example I need a brand. What should be as consistent as possible across the web when developing a local SEO strategy is brand identity. That is harder than you could imagine these days. These are my failures to find one for this example with Google results for each. These are just names I made up off the top of my head thinking they were unique.

  • “Bobs Coffee Shop” – 9,470 results
  • “Martian Bob’s Cafe” – 2 results

OK, I decided on Martian Bob’s Cafe as the brand. All of this is just fictitious to provide an example of how Local SEO is done. So Martian Bob has his little cafe in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It is almost a given that we will get a first-page Google listing for the brand “Martian Bob’s Cafe” since no one else is using it. But we need people in Tulsa to find out about Martian Bob’s local delivery service. Google in all its infinite wisdom now has a focus on Local SEO based on your location. This is a result I got from a search for “coffee delivery”. I did not ask Google for local results, it just automatically assumes that is what I want.

Now for this example, Martian Bob is not there yet. But it would be fairly easy to get listed on the maps results just by setting up a Google business account for Martian Bob and setting up his website with information that clearly shows his cafe is in Tulsa.

The next step in Local SEO after you have decided on a brand is to find long-tailed keyword phrases with a larger volume of searches and low SEO difficulty. This example shows results for “coffee delivery Tulsa” with Ubersuggest. We would add “coffee in Tulsa” to our keyword research list for Martian Bob. It has a search volume of 880 and SEO difficulty of only 14 out of 100.

The actual process of doing Local SEO takes days and can take weeks based on how in-depth you want us to go. How can you implement local SEO?

Local SEO, i.e. local positioning in the Google search engine, can be carried out in two ways, by positioning the page among search results and the Google My Business listing on Google Maps. 

Usually, when promoting locally, we use keywords to optimize the website, which in addition to the name of the service also contain the name of the city. For example, entering the word “positioning” in the Google search engine may show a map with companies closest to your current location that have the offer you are interested in and below the websites of companies with offers for e.g. local positioning. However, this phrase can be narrowed down to a given location by adding the city ​​to a keyword. Now the result will be completely different, because now the maps will show companies that are based in a given city or its area, and the search results and offers of companies will probably be personalized to customers from that city.

What do local search results look like?

Usually, after entering the phrase in the search engine and adding the city name to it, Google Ads ads will appear at the top, then a map with three companies, above which there may still be a carousel from industry directories, and below we will see the organic results with URLs to websites.
