How To SEO For Website Rankings

There are several types of SEO and they are hard to cross lines on.

  • International SEO
  • Regional SEO
  • Local SEO

The latter Local SEO is Google’s favorite and default. Local SEO is what the average user finds on the SERP(Search Engine Results Page). This is accomplished by using GPS targeting and IP location matched with local business listings. Further down the page, you will find my discussion on this issue with regional SEO, I am still hoping to find a solution.

Glenn Website Design is an international business operating online without any local offices other than our address in Tulsa OK. For SEO we do very well there. BUT all of our business is done online. Our local service area includes all English-speaking countries. So for now I have no true answer for how you should do International and Regional SEO that covers our specific problem. There are a few ways listed in my discussion below but none I choose to use right now.

GOOGLE SEO

Google has written THE book on SEO in the USA and for much of the world. If you can rank on the first page of Google then the rest of the search engines do not matter. But that is not an easy task for new websites starting out. It takes time to build in all of the search engine optimization factors required to get to the first page for the primary keywords that your target audience is going to be searching for.

GOOGLE ALGORITHM

The google search engine uses a list of more than 200 filters called an algorithm. They use this to determine which websites get to the first page of the search results SERP. This algorithm gets even more complicated because not only is it looking at the page’s content and other factors related to the page but it also includes info on the user. Local search engine optimization is important

If you are interested I found a webpage that lists all 200 possible factors in the algorithm Google 200 Ranking Factors.

GOOGLE 88%

BING 6%

YAHOO 3%

These are the major three search engines in the USA.
Search Engine Optimization is to get your website on first-page search results.

Local Search SEO

The latest trend that has been developed for a few years now includes incorporating the info of the searcher into the results returned. For example, the top results for someone searching for “web design” in Atlanta will be local listings. Another person searching for “web design” in New York will get a completely different list of web design companies on their first-page results.

The only way for the user to get something different is to include other keywords into their search. This is done using a basic part of the Internet functionality. Every time you log on to the internet you do it through an IP address. This tells the search engine the general area where you are when you do the search.

Primary Requirements For SEO

Page Speed: I list this first because it is not only important for your SEO it will also be a deciding factor whether your visitor stays or not. Most internet users only give you seconds to deliver interesting content. You should use Google Page Speed Insights to determine how fast your page loads. This is even more important now than ever as more than half of the internet users are on a handphone.

Page Title: The page title and its corresponding meta tag that resides in the page code should match. The title should reflect the main topic of the web page.

Meta Description: This is in the background code. It should be one sentence long describing the topic of the page.

Page Content: The content needs to be well written using paragraphs with header titles. This is also where you need to focus keywords that you want people searching you to find your web page. The number of keywords will vary based on the amount of content. In general, a one-screen page should be 3 to 5 of each keyword or phrase you are using.

Back Links: Links need to come from pages related to your topic. The higher the importance of “Doman Authority”: to google the website the link comes from will determine how important that link is to your page. Normally you should seek to have links from various websites, not many links from one website.

Out Going Links: It is expected that you will need links to other sources related to your page’s content to strengthen the topic.

Location Address: As mentioned above Google looks at the user’s location and matches that with search results. It is important you have your address on the website. You will also want to have a business listing with Google telling them your address and other contact info. You should also list your business with local listing directories like Yelp.

AI Search Engines

Search Engine Optimization SEO

Search engines have gotten very smart over the past few years. They do not just look for keywords but they look at websites the same as you or I do. They look for real content. Their algorithms weigh the site’s own structure combined with other factors like social referrals to the site, other sites in the same field linking to the site, and even how people use the website. If visitors come and go quickly that can hurt your ranking whereas if visitors or staying and looking at other pages once they arrive it helps.

We start our Search Engine Optimization SEO analysis by doing keyword research before we start any copy-writing. We assemble a keyword checklist from our research. We look for keywords or phrases related to the subject matter with the least amount of competition versus the highest volume of searches.

SEO Checklist

  • Research
  • Competitive analysis
  • Keyword List
  • Meta tags, title description
  • Quality content
  • Develop page structure
  • Use headers, subheaders with keywords
  • Name graphic files using keywords
  • Use keyword alt tags in graphics
  • Submit site to major search engines.
  • Backlinks
  • Monitor and adjust

SEO with WordPress

SEO With WordPress we use the search engine optimization Yoast tool to help us verify the right amount of keywords is distributed through the content. Too many of one word and it will be rejected. Too little and it will not get much power as an authority on the subject. All of this is determined based on the size of the content versus the right amount of keywords in the text.

Backlinks are a key to SEO and can give your website the superpower it needs if done correctly. But never just buy backlinks by the bulk. Without relevancy, backlinks will most likely hurt your site more than help you. We only offer backlinks as a separate package because they take a lot of time to get the right ones. You need to get websites with authority in your area of content linking to you. Social marketing can also help in this area. In most cases to get good links, you need to have content that is useful to others that they want to link to naturally. Another option is to find websites willing to share your articles in return for a link to your website. Writing news releases will help in this area.

SEO Analytics

Search Engine Optimization SEO does not stop with completing the website. You must keep your content up to date. You have to continue to improve on your backlinking strategy. Using google analytics you can monitor the results of which words are getting you traffic and which ones are not. Use this to focus on improving your placement for words the search engines or giving you placement for already.

SEO Guarantee

We cannot guarantee you first place listings for any keywords, no one can. But we have found that using the above techniques works. SEO is an ongoing process of analyzing and adjusting the web page.

Glenn Website Design

Glenn is a Search Engine Optimization SEO agency focused on content writing and not keyword stuffing. Without the correct SEO, a website is nothing more than a fancy digital business card. Here at Glenn, we understand SEO, and even on our most basic discount website offerings, we start with incorporating advanced SEO techniques into every website we build. There is no magic about SEO; It is just simple common sense thinking combined with research

PPC Campaign Management Services

The only way to be sure you will get the first-place listing is to pay for it per click. Google has the best security program on the market with ad-words. You only pay for the advertisement when someone actually clicks it. Be careful there are many companies that offer PPC at a cheaper price than Google. What they do is send you traffic that you can see but the visitors never buy. Why? because these companies take your money and pay people to click on your advertisements. You get loads of visitors as they promise but no buyers.

SEO Getting Started

SEO is like starting a fire with primitive tools. First, you need the right materials. Then you need heat or a spark to get it started. Once you have an ember keep feeding it oxygen until a flame bursts forth. This flame will quickly go back out if you do not have the right materials handy to keep feeding it. If you put the wrong thing on it like say water it goes out quickly. But if you have dry wood to feed the flame it will keep burning as long as you keep feeding it new wood. The more wood you put on the bigger and faster it burns. If you want your SEO / Flame to burn steady then feed it slowly and it will return you the heat/profit over a long period of time.

How Does SEO Work

SEO Search Engine Optimization begins with the words that people type in to search for your products or services. Optimizing your website for the one word related to your business is often hopeless. There are powerful giants in the business that all but own that word. So to have your website found you will need to be creative and resourceful. Optimization needs to start up front, not as an afterthought. Also, keep in mind that SEO is a long-term strategy not an overnight miracle in most cases. Make your SEO adjustments, monitor and analyze the results and improve upon what is working for you.

Keyword Research

Search engines have gotten very smart over the past few years. They do not just look for keywords but they look at websites the same as you or I do. They look for real content. Their algorithms weigh the site’s own structure combined with other factors like social referrals to the site, other sites in the same field linking to the site, and even how people use the website. Start your search engine optimization SEO analysis by doing keyword research before we start any content or copy-writing. Assemble a keyword checklist for your research. Look for keywords or phrases related to the subject with the least amount of competition versus the highest volume of searches.

Content Writing

Search Engine Optimization SEO has to focus on content writing and not keyword stuffing. Without the correct SEO, a website is nothing more than a fancy digital business card. There is no magic about SEO; it is common sense thinking combined with research. SEO begins with words; what will people type in to search for what you are offering? Optimizing your website for the one word related to your business is often hopeless. There are giant companies in the business that all but own the words your small company wants to be ranked for.  To get your website found you have to be creative and resourceful.

Strategy and Content

  • Competitor Analysis
  • Customer Analysis
  • Product Descriptions
  • Content Development

Each web page you create has to be SEO as you go for keywords that have a volume of searches but with little competition. You have to check each keyword you think will help and see how much competition versus how much traffic it could possibly generate.

Research for SEO

The key to getting FREE first page listings is to target less competitive related keywords using web page titles, content, meta tags, alt image tags … links structure. I use UberSuggest to find the words combined by comparing the results on Google.

Keyword List

Make a shortlist of words and phrases you know people might search for to find your service or products. Search Google for these words to find your competitors. Then look at what other offshoots of these words that they might be using which is related to you. Go to Ubersuggest and input your words. Check which ones actually have people searching for that term. Then go to Google search engine and search for each one. What you are looking for is keyword terms that people are searching for but do not have 1 billion web pages competing in a search listing. Best to find keyword terms that have less than 1 million web pages on a search listing…. a few 100 pages competing is an Easter egg.

Building Web Page Content

Once you have a list of terms that meet the above guidelines you should then start building a site page structure that uses these keywords that are related to specific details about your products.

  • use the keyword in your title
  • in your content
  • as the web address
  • alt tags for pictures
  • in all your meta tags

If you are using WordPress then I highly recommend using the plugin Yoast SEO to guide you in the right direction.

Ongoing SEO required

  • Update product pages often to reflect recent information
  • Add additional content pages related to products
  • Set up a blog of DIY related products to be updated 2 times per week
  • Make matching posts to social accounts
  • Post a new YouTube video weekly
  • Look for alternative social and free listings to list the website
  • Building local citations: Listing in all major directories that people use like Yellow Pages, Yelp. (No inferior spam/inferior directories will be used)
  • Monitor the website on Google and Bing analytics for what is working and optimize using keywords and adding content for what is working.
  • Research competitors find who is linking to them and see if we can get those links too.
  • Budget a pay-per-click campaign on Google AdWords.

Regional SEO – Search Engine Optimization is Dead

Local SEO as a default in most browsers has killed the old way people receive search results. It no longer matters if you are the best, if you have the most links, or even being the talk of the world. Google has decided for everyone that it is in their best interests to give biased local results based on the GPS coordinates where the searcher is when they initiate the search. Yes as a user, you can change that in Google settings. But you should not have to. The first results I get online, I want them to be the best choices, usually based on a certain region. All of this can be set up, but Google does not offer an easy click button for the average user to change it. You have to search for how to do it and then go into settings and find the right button and change it.

That kind of search engine function is great for the local plumber or handyman. All they have to do is let Google know they are in town using Google business listings and they are number one in many cases. But for international-run businesses like myself, it is not good at all. I sell wholesale furniture and web design services to any country, any city that is buying. What do I do is the conundrum of the day.

OPTIONS:

Set GEO location for the website in Google Search Console – the country only

Set up different versions of the site using the different top-level domains for country

Set up separate language option

Regional SEO – Create unique separate city pages. Be careful because Google filters out SPAMMY websites for this after the penguin update in 2012.

Eliminating SPAMMY Websites

Not a lot of options that work for city targeting. Google business listings limit you to one city, one country. No matter what you do competing with Local SEO is something Google has done its best to eliminate. Google has created a very biased search engine that is tailored to the way they believe the internet should behave. This all came about to eliminate SPAM. Webmasters abused linking which Google was based on. So Google came up with other methods to determine the importance of a site. Webmasters abused local SEO with doorway copy pages for individual cities. So Google stopped that.

How To Expand Local SEO to Regional, or International

The only way to safely do this is to create unique high-quality content for every area you wish to target. For example, you run a business as I do Google GEO based in Tulsa OK. I can still compete with web designers in Atlanta. What has to be done is to create a webpage or pages that support Atlanta. The content cannot just be copies of what I have made for the rest of the website. It needs to show how my company will be added incentive to the Atlanta area. I need to mention local businesses, and landmarks and describe how Glenn’s Website Design is good for Atlanta. I need to get testimonials from people in Atlanta that have done business with our company. Basically, I need a mini-website just for Atlanta. And the final knife in the heart, not having a local Atlanta phone number or address is going to hurt my chances of getting on Local SERP for Atlanta. Also, I cannot get listed with local listings, the knife twist.
